Top US Zip Codes for Finding Freelance Clients
Where are client budgets actually concentrated? This page ranks US ZIP codes by the number of high-income households — the single best public proxy for freelance client potential — computed from official IRS Statistics of Income ZIP-code data (Tax Year 2022 (irs.gov — public domain)). Use it to target your outreach, price your services, and pick your service areas.
The 60 highest client-potential zip codes in the US
Ranked by the number of returns with $200,000+ adjusted gross income — affluence and volume combined. "Share" is that count as a share of all returns filed from the zip, and "Avg AGI" is the average adjusted gross income per return in that zip.

How to turn zip-level data into clients
Set your Google Business Profile service areas
List your top zip codes as service areas so local searches (“copywriter near me”) can match you to the neighborhoods where client budgets are highest. This is free and takes minutes.
Price to the local budget curve
Zips where the average AGI runs several times the national average support premium project pricing. Adjust quotes by the target area, not just your portfolio.
Prospect where the count is high, not just the share
A 40% high-earner share in a small zip beats nothing, but zips with 8,000–13,000 high-income households offer far more prospects. This ranking is sorted by count for exactly that reason.
Write locally, not generically
Portfolios, cold emails and proposals that reference the client’s area convert better. Use the AI Blog Post Writer or AI Email Writer to produce location-aware drafts in seconds — free with a free account.
Match your channels to the metro
Each metro section below shows where that metro’s high-income households actually file from — including suburban hotspots that are easy to overlook (the #1 zip nationally is a Houston suburb, not Manhattan).
Track and iterate
Pick three zips per week, run one targeted outreach action per zip, and log responses. Zip-level focus turns vague “marketing” into a repeatable pipeline you can measure.
Top client hotspots by metro

Methodology & sources
Metric. For every US ZIP code we sum the number of individual income-tax returns filed (IRS column N1 across all adjusted gross income brackets) and the number of returns in the $200,000-or-more bracket (IRS SOI agi_stub 6). Zips with fewer than 250 total returns are excluded from rankings to avoid noise. "$200k+ households" throughout this page means returns filed, not persons — some households file jointly and some individuals file more than one return.
Sources. Income figures: IRS Statistics of Income ZIP-code data (IRS SOI ZIP-code data, Tax Year 2022 (irs.gov — public domain), U.S. federal government work — public domain). Locality, state and county names: simplemaps US ZIP Codes basic v1.95.1 (simplemaps.com — free license, attribution required) (free license — attribution provided here as required). Average AGI is total AGI (IRS A00100) divided by total returns, expressed in thousands of dollars.
Limitations. IRS publishes each tax year with a lag and masks suppressed values; the 2022 vintage is the latest published at generation time (2026-10-06). Zip-code boundaries are approximate postal constructs and do not align perfectly with municipal borders. Use this as a directional targeting aid, not a precise population census.
Frequently asked questions
- What does '$200k+ households' mean in this ranking?
- It is the number of individual income-tax returns filed from that ZIP code reporting adjusted gross income of $200,000 or more, according to the IRS Statistics of Income ZIP-code dataset (Tax Year 2022). It is the closest public proxy for how many affluent households — and therefore potential clients — live or work in a ZIP code.
- How can a freelancer use this zip-code data?
- Use the high-income zips to decide where to focus local outreach: set service areas in your Google Business Profile, tailor pricing to local budgets, join chambers of commerce or community groups in those areas, and create locally relevant portfolios and proposals. The goal is to spend your limited prospecting time where client budgets are concentrated.
- Where does this data come from and how current is it?
- The ranking is computed from the IRS Statistics of Income individual income tax ZIP-code data, IRS SOI ZIP-code data, Tax Year 2022 (irs.gov — public domain) — the latest published vintage at generation time. ZIP-to-locality mapping and county names come from simplemaps US ZIP Codes basic v1.95.1 (simplemaps.com — free license, attribution required). IRS publishes each tax year with a multi-year lag, so figures reflect household distribution as of the 2022 tax year.
- Why rank by the number of high-income households instead of median income?
- A zip with a very high median income but few households offers fewer potential clients than a zip with many high earners. Ranking by the raw count of $200k+ returns surfaces zips with both affluence and volume — the best combined signal of realistic client demand for freelance services.
